Overcoming Opiates: Your guide to Codeine addiction recovery

Learning from others’ codeine addiction experiences can offer hope and guidance in our own struggles. Their stories can provide insights and even direction for recovery. In this blog, we’ll explore a recent YouTube interview with a man from the UK who is currently battling codeine addiction. It is hoped that valuable lessons will be learned for anyone’s journey to recovery.

Paul’s journey through codeine addiction

In this heartfelt case study, depicted in an interview conducted by the YouTube channel ‘TrueTube’, we’re introduced to Paul, a courageous young man from the UK who found himself grappling with an addiction to codeine. Paul’s journey is a testament to the complexities of addiction and the profound impact it can have on individuals’ lives.

At just 14 years old, Paul began experiencing hip pain, leading to a prescription for codeine from his doctor at 15. Like many facing chronic pain, Paul hoped for relief, but unfortunately, the medication didn’t provide the solace he sought. Despite his initial intentions, Paul found himself gradually increasing his intake, seeking that elusive sense of comfort and warmth he felt from the pills.

“So then I took, like, more tablets. And that’s when I got this, like, just warm rush. It was like a hot bath but on the inside.”

Reflecting on his journey, Paul acknowledges his lack of awareness about addiction at a young age, highlighting the common misconception that prescription medication is inherently safe.
His honesty about the allure of the drug’s effects is a scary reminder of the seductive nature of substance abuse.

“Ever since that day (the first time he took codeine), it was really, like, it’s on from now on. I’m going to feel like this as much as I can and as often as I can.”

Paul’s account of codeine addiction symptoms, known as withdrawal symptoms, paints a vivid picture of the physical and emotional turmoil he endured, showcasing the unbearable reality of breaking free from addiction:

“You are in hell. Like, you can’t think, you can’t eat, you can’t sleep. You’re hot one minute, then freezing cold, and your bones are on fire, but your skin’s cold, and you are sweating constantly. You are vomiting; you’re having diarrhoea.”

“And it’s when I went to my mate’s house and he saw how red my eyes were, how dark the skin, the bags around my eyes were and just saw me in a state. And he was like, ‘You need to get off this. You can’t be on this anymore. It’s going to kill you.'”

He eventually decided to get help after a close friend urged him to get help with his addiction. Paul snapped at him angrily, rejecting the help and stating that his friend didn’t understand the situation. Embarrassed by his actions, he sought further help.

“I got referred to ‘We Are With You’. That’s when I started talking to Jo, the person I talk to on the phone. And ever since then she keeps me… like… she saved my life. Put it that way. Yeah. Having support, like, helps more than you think. I thought no one can help me, I thought no-one could be a help to me at all.”

Paul also started to attend Narcotics Anonymous meetings, where he stated that he learned more about what addiction is and ways to control the recovery process.

He honestly admitted that although he’s not currently completely sober, he’s managing with weekly prescriptions instead of an overload of codeine as per his prescription. This approach allows him to regulate the amount he takes as he gradually tapers off the drug altogether.

He mentioned that having a supportive group around him enables him to express his thoughts and stay on the right track at all times.

Furthermore, he remains active in his hobbies. Paul mentioned that making music and expressing himself through his lyrics allow him to vocalise his true feelings.

What can we learn from Paul’s addiction?

While it was terrible to hear of Paul’s addiction, it was inspiring to hear how he seems to have firmly planted his roots within the soil and given himself the best possible chance of recovery. From Paul’s video, we can learn a few lessons in the recovery journey:

Reaching out for help is key to start the process of recovery

Paul’s journey toward recovery is marked by his brave efforts to seek help and the invaluable support network he has built around him. By reaching out for assistance from organisations like “We Are With You” and attending Narcotics Anonymous meetings, Paul demonstrates a commitment to overcoming his addiction. Through these channels, he has found guidance, understanding and encouragement, which have been instrumental in his progress.

Finding a creative outlet helps during the recovery process

Moreover, the emotional reliance Paul has developed on music has provided him with a powerful outlet for expressing his feelings and confronting his struggles. His involvement in music not only serves as a form of therapy but also enables him to articulate his innermost thoughts and emotions in a healthy and constructive manner. This creative expression fosters self-awareness and aids in processing the complexities of his journey toward recovery.

Small steps are sometimes the biggest steps

By actively engaging with his support network and channelling his emotions through music, Paul has been able to reduce the amount of codeine gradually he consumes. While he acknowledges that he is not yet entirely sober, his weekly prescriptions and newfound sense of control signify significant progress. His determination to manage his medication intake responsibly reflects a growing resilience and commitment to reclaiming his life from the grips of addiction.

What are the next steps for people with a codeine addiction?

While we certainly commend individuals like Paul for their efforts to overcome codeine addiction, it’s crucial to emphasise the importance of seeking help from medical professionals for those struggling with codeine addiction. This is because individuals with any form of substance use disorder face a 40-60% likelihood of experiencing a relapse.

While relapse is often an anticipated aspect of the recovery journey, if not managed correctly, it can lead individuals back to a life of substance abuse or, worse, result in an overdose.

This is why we recommend reaching out to receive codeine addiction treatment, especially in a codeine rehabilitation programme.

What is codeine rehab like in a rehab centre?

Residential codeine rehabilitation offers you a chance to undergo medically supervised detoxification, providing crucial support for managing codeine addiction withdrawal symptoms and ensuring your safety and comfort during this challenging phase of recovery. Under the care of experienced medical professionals, you have access to medications and interventions to alleviate withdrawal symptoms and closely monitor your condition.

Once you complete the detox process, you transition into the rehabilitation phase of treatment. Here, you’ll delve into the underlying factors contributing to your addiction and learn the tools and skills necessary for long-term sobriety. Therapies like Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) and Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT) help you understand the source of your addiction, identify unhealthy thought patterns and behaviours and develop coping strategies to manage cravings and triggers.

Alongside traditional therapies, residential codeine rehab often incorporates holistic approaches such as art therapy, yoga and mindfulness practices. Engaging in these activities provides you with alternative outlets for self-expression and stress relief while promoting physical and emotional well-being. Through these practices, you’ll learn healthy coping mechanisms and gain a deeper understanding of yourself, which is invaluable in maintaining sobriety outside of rehab.

Aftercare planning is a crucial part of the rehab process, supporting you as you transition back into your everyday life. Aftercare programmes may include ongoing therapy sessions, support groups and access to resources that help you stay connected to your recovery community. This continuity of care helps you to navigate the challenges of early recovery effectively.
